Ultraleap Introduces Leap Motion Controller 2 for XR

June 1, 2023 – super leapThe provider of extended reality (XR) technology such as hand tracking and mid-air haptics announced the launch of its Jump Motion Controller 2The company's second-generation hand-tracking camera allows users to use their own hands to interact naturally with 3D digital content.

Building on its predecessor, Leap Motion Controller 2 is the ideal hardware to experience Ultraleap's hand tracking technology. According to the company, key improvements over the original Leap Motion controller include a higher-resolution camera, a larger field of view and reduced power consumption of the 25%, all in the smaller 30% package for optimal placement and convenience.

Ultraleap says the new hardware is the most flexible camera the company has ever developed and is compatible across platforms and free hardware, including virtual, augmented and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) headsets, PCs and holographic displays.

The company did note that the original Leap Motion controller is now being retired with the release of the new product. However, existing customers will continue to have access to the latest compatible software, including the upcoming Gemini for macOS. According to the company, support will continue, but future versions of the software will not provide any performance improvements to the original Leap Motion controller device.

Leap Motion Controller 2 Release Partners

Leap Motion Controller 2 is designed for the XR world, allowing users to immerse themselves longer in Pico's untethered VR experiences, including Pico Neo 3 Pro and Pro Eye, Pico 4 Enterprise and Pico G3 business models.

Using the Leap Motion Controller 2 as an accessory, users can also enhance their experiences on PC VR and the untethered Android XR2 platform with Lenovo's ThinkReality VRX headset.

Starting at AWE this week, Ultraleap is integrating its Leap Motion Controller 2 with DigiLens' ARGO smart glasses, allowing attendees to experience truly mobile AR for use by enterprises and light industry workers. At the event, attendees can experience interactive learning using 3DCAD, an application that allows users to explore and interact with 3D models.

Wider platform support and more software

With Leap Motion Controller 2, Ultraleap's Gemini hand tracking will be compatible with macOS, Android XR2 and Windows for the first time, giving content creators the opportunity to reach a global audience with their games and apps.

In addition to XR use cases, the company noted that its Leap Motion Controller 2 can also help enhance the way performers express music and art, enable VTuber hosts to embody their avatars, and allow integration with apps and games on macOS, Android XR2 Make natural interactions with windows.

Since its launch in 2013, 1 million units of the original Leap Motion controller have been sold, and more than 350,000 developers have created apps and interactive experiences with hand tracking, according to Ultraleap.
