Meta's new Virtual Keyboard for Unity solved these problems. It's not just an API call to an overlay, but a developer's actual prefab location in their app. The virtual keyboard works with a hand or a controller, and developers can choose between direct touch mode at close range or a laser pointer at a distance.

The operating system populates the surface of the virtual keyboard with the keys at the user's location, which means that even if the developer never updates the app, the keyboard will get future features and improvements over time.

The virtual keyboard was introduced in April as an experimental feature - so it couldn't be shipped to the store or App Lab - but it's now upgraded to a production feature in the v54 SDK released this week.
