existQuestA snippet of a tutorial describing the automatic room scanning of the Quest 3 was found in the firmware.

Firmware ConnoisseurSamuliaThe clips were spotted in a public test channel release of v55 of the Quest system software. These snippets will be displayed when the user starts Quest 3 for the first time.

Quest 3 was officially announced last week.MetaFull specs have not been revealed, but it is claimed that the visualizer is 40% thinner and the GPU performance is Quest Pro的两倍以上,且由于双4百万像素摄像头和深度传感器,色彩透视比Quest Pro更先进。

Meta also hints that the Quest 3 will be able to "intelligently understand and respond to objects in your physical space," but hasn't gone into detail on what that actually means.

Quest 3 room scan

One of the leaked clips depicts users walking around a room, looking at walls and furniture. A beam of light emanating from the headset - likely representing a depth sensor - then generates a blue grid around the object.

The clip then jumps to when the headset sees the entire room, showing the "scanning done" interface as everything is meshed.

HTCThe XR Elite also has a depth sensor, and uses that for its test feature for automatic room setup. However, the XR Elite's room scanning is limited to flat surfaces like walls, ceilings, and tables. A clip from Quest 3 showing accurate meshing of complex 3D objects. However, we don't yet know if the level of detail shown in the clip is just illustrative or truly representative of what Quest 3 is capable of.

Generating a 3D room mesh is useful for both virtual and mixed reality.

Quest 3 'Smart Guardians'

To use VR with the existing Quest headset, you need to manually draw the zone boundaries on the floor through a perspective view of the live scene. As you approach these boundaries, an eight-foot wall will be revealed. But that limits you to using VR in a space that's completely empty, even if you can step across it.

The Verge mentioned in a Meta product roadmap leaked in March of this year that the Quest 3 has a feature called "Smart Guardian." Some leaked clips seem to show this - users in VR will be aware of nearby furniture and be alerted when they're near a real wall. with traditional GuardGuardianYou can use more hand space in VR than you can, including space above beds and desks.

Virtual objects interact with real rooms.

For mixed reality, room meshes enable virtual objects to interact with real objects, including being occluded by (appearing behind) furniture, placed on surfaces like tables, and bouncing off walls. A leaked clip shows just that.

Using mixed reality with room awareness on existing Quests requires manually marking out the rectangular cuboids of your walls and furniture. This arduous process means that few Quest developers actually take advantage of the scene graph feature today. The Quest Pro was originally supposed to have a depth sensor, but it was dropped a few months before launch. Without this depth sensor, the Quest Pro probably wouldn't have the same room-scanning capabilities that the Quest 3 now seems to be introducing.

Full details on Quest 3's room understanding and mixed reality will be revealed at Connect 2023 on September 27.
