The latest version of the popular flight simulator game will introduce new classes and aircraft, but will it support virtual reality?
Over the weekend, Microsoft said it was developing a standalone sequel to the 2020 version of Microsoft Flight Simulator for PC and Xbox consoles, promising "the latest simulation, cloud computing, machine learning, graphics and gaming technologies."
At the Xbox Games Showcase 2023, we got a glimpse of an exciting array of events and classes via a brand new trailer.
These include aerial firefighting, search and rescue, helicopter cargo, air ambulance, agricultural aviation, mountain rescue, skydiving aviation, aerial construction, industrial cargo, long-range cargo, VIP charter, air racing, gliding, scientific research, experimental flying, low-altitude training , executive plane, airship tour and hot air balloon tour
Ah, there are so many types of flying...
Unfortunately, there was no mention of virtual reality throughout the presentation. It's unclear whether Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 will support PC VR headsets like previous versions did. Still, given the overwhelming response the last game received, we'd be surprised if Microsoft doesn't confirm official VR support ahead of launch.
What we do know is that developer Asobo Studio will continue to provide updates for the 2020 version of the game, and that all current aircraft, airports, and most store-bought add-ons will be compatible with the new version. These include the "Dune Expansion," a free update coming this November that will allow players to fly real elephant-birds of the "Atreides" family in the Arrakis Desert.
