Apple VisionProApple Vision Pro is about to set a lot of expectations about what's "right" and "wrong" in the world of mixed reality, which Apple prefers to call spatial computing. Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, one of the main figures in the creation of the virtual reality revolution, has published his thoughts.

In a nearly two-hour podcast with Peter Diamandis, Lackey touched on the areas of his work he has done over the years, touching on his role at defense company Anduril, where he role in kickstarting the modern era of virtual reality, and pretty much everything he thinks about in terms of augmented and virtual reality.

There is no doubt that whether Apple, as a new entrant, is doing the “right thing” in the field of mixed reality is the hottest topic of controversy. Lackey was mostly positive about the Vision Pro, saying it's clearly Apple.

"If I were Apple, I would do something different," Lackey told Diamandis. "They basically got everything right and didn't make any serious mistakes. I mean, I think Apple is going into the market segment that Apple should be going into."

Lackey believes it would be a mistake for Apple to go downmarket, saying the Cupertino tech giant has taken "the exact way I've always wanted Apple to do, and the way Oculus did in the early years".

Apple certainly didn't skimp on the XR's specs, but that's not the problem you might think it is. For him, the $3,500 headset offers the best components for the high-end market, including "the highest possible resolution, the highest quality display, and the best ergonomics."

In fact, Lackey said, Apple's first-generation devices shouldn't be thinking about price at this point. For him, it's about "igniting more people's desire, as I dreamed years ago, before people can afford it, and they think they desperately want VR."

In the world of building blocks, few things can surprise Lackey, though the Vision Pro's detachable battery case is an option that slightly surprised the Oculus founder. When it comes to lightening users' heads, Lackey says shipping a battery case is "the right thing to do."

"I used to be a big supporter of [external battery boxes] when it came to Oculus, but unfortunately I lost that battle in my later years and [Oculus] relied entirely on putting all the batteries and processing in the headset And not just in the helmet, but in the front of the helmet, which adds a lot of weight to the headgear, cluttering it up...not a good decision."

One direction Apple is working in that Lakey doesn't like is controllers, or rather, the lack of them. The Vision Pro will ship without any form of VR motion controllers, meaning developers will need hand and eye tracking as their primary input methods.

"As you all know, I'm a big proponent of VR input, and I think that might be one of the things that differentiates me from Apple. On the other hand, they have a plan for VR input that goes beyond fingertip [click] input. They take A focused approach to marketing, but I think they have a broader vision of the future beyond just eyes and fingers."

Lackey supports the company's decision to split the helmet into a battery case and headset, not only for the near-term Vision Pro, but also for future versions of the device, which may require more batteries, processors and antennas. Setting the expectation for this split configuration now may help Apple go thinner and lighter with the headset, and never have to deal with the balancing fat and weight issues found in today's one-piece standalone headsets.

Ultimately, Lackey said, whether the average person will wear these devices in the future will ultimately depend on clever marketing, since shrinking the size to a form thinner than "heavy sunglasses" means the device may not be as functional at the smaller size. will be so powerful. It's still a tough job for a company like Apple to normalize these AR/VR headsets in the future, and in the meantime, Apple will certainly put their devices on the "right celebrity, right influencer." " on the head.
