Sony's full-body tracking system, Mocopi -- which is compatible with the Quest headset VRChat -- is coming to the US.
The Mocopi tracker, available in a kit for full-body tracking, costs $450 and is available now through Sony's online store. The kit, which will start shipping to U.S. buyers on July 14, includes six color-coded IMU-based sensors and a charging case.
Sony has made it clear that there is currently no integration with PlayStation VR2, but the company hasn't ruled out the possibility that there might be one in the future. Currently, the Mocopi sensor communicates via Bluetooth with iPhone 12 and later models, as well as Sony's Xperia Android phones, but other modern phones may also be compatible. The motion data generated by Mocopi can be transmitted to services such as VRChat and gaming tools such as Unity.
Sony announced the full-body tracking suite last year, shipping it first in Japan, claiming that its "proprietary algorithm requires only six sensors for accurate motion capture." The sensors are said to be water and dust resistant and come with the Velcro straps and clips included in the kit.
Over time, we'll be curious to see the results creators get with Mocopi, as using its built-in accelerometer and angular rate sensors can be somewhat limiting. Some PC VR users use Valve's SteamVR tracking system and Vive trackers for full-body tracking in the app, and the accuracy offered by the system may make it difficult for die-hard fans to accept any shortfalls. Still, a $450 PC-in-a-box optional full-body tracking system may have application and audience for some users of standalone VR headsets.
