Meta is reportedly in talks with Tencent to bring the Quest to the Chinese market

Talks between Meta and Tencent reportedly culminated late last year, with Tencent Chairman Ma Huateng deciding to negotiate first and "see what deal they can come up with," the Wall Street Journal reported.

Undoubtedly, the most complex part of the negotiations will revolve around the distribution of VR content and its vetting for the Chinese market. It is said that Meta's global products will be offered alongside Tencent's own apps and services.

More recently, there have been reports that Chinese executives are concerned that Zuckerberg will be unpopular in China as companies such as ByteDance are accused of technology theft. A spokesman for Meta declined to comment on the WSJ report, and Tencent did not respond to a request for comment.

This isn't the first time Meta VR hardware has caused a stir in mainland China. In 2018, Meta (then Facebook) signed a deal with Xiaomi to launch a Chinese version of the Oculus Go, marketed by Xiaomi as the "Xiaomi Standalone VR Device". At the time, this amounted to a quid pro quo, as Xiaomi was responsible for manufacturing the Oculus Go, giving it exclusive rights in the mainland Chinese market.
