2023年8月3日,皮克斯、adobe,apple,AutodeskandNVIDIAJointly issued a statement, with the Linux Foundation's Joint Development Foundation (JDF) jointly announced the establishmentAlliance for OpenUSD(AOUSD) to facilitate Pixar'sUniversal Scene Description(USD) standardization, development, evolution and growth of technology.

The alliance aims to advance the Open Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD) capabilities to achieve the purpose of standardizing the 3D ecosystem. By promoting greater interoperability of 3D tools and data, the alliance aims to enable developers and content creators to describe, combine and simulate large-scale 3D projects and build an increasingly broad range of 3D products and services, the alliance said in a statement .

OpenUSD is a high-performance 3D scene description technology created by Pixar Animation Studios that enables interoperability between tools, data, and workflows. It serves as the basis for managing and processing 3D graphics data and scenes in a variety of applications, including computer animation, visual effects, and virtual reality (VR). OpenUSD provides a standardized and efficient way to store, exchange and manipulate complex 3D data, enabling artists, animators and developers to collaborate more effectively on large-scale projects.

Steve May, Chief Technology Officer of Pixar and Chairman of AOUSD, said: "Universal Scene Description was invented by Pixar and is the technical foundation of our advanced animation production pipeline. OpenUSD is based on years of research and application of Pixar films. We will The project is open source, and the influence of OpenUSD has now expanded beyond the film, visual effects, and animation industries to other industries that increasingly rely on 3D data for media interaction. With the announcement of AOUSD, we welcome the exciting next One step to signal: continued development of OpenUSD as a technology and adoption as an international standard."

The consortium will develop detailed specifications to enable wider compatibility and adoption, integration and implementation of OpenUSD. This will also allow other standards bodies to incorporate it into their specifications.

The Linux Foundation's JDF was chosen to host the project because it provides the corporate and legal infrastructure that enables organizations to develop technical specifications, standards, datasets and source code. As such, JDF will provide a path to accreditation through ISO while promoting open, efficient and effective development of the OpenUSD specification.

AOUSD will be the primary forum within the industry to collaboratively define technology enhancements. The consortium is also open to any interested companies and organizations that want to participate in shaping the future of OpenUSD.

Mike Rockwell, Apple's vice president of visual products, said: "OpenUSD will help accelerate the next generation of augmented reality experiences, from art creation to content delivery, and generate more and more spatial computing applications. Apple has been actively involved in the development of USD , which is a must-have technology for the innovative visionOS platform and the new Reality Composer Pro developer tool. We look forward to developing it into a widely adopted standard."

"OpenUSD provides 3D developers, artists, and designers with a complete foundation that can handle large-scale industrial, digital content creation, and simulation workloads and enable multiple applications," said Guy Martin, director of open source and standards at NVIDIA. Broad interoperability among the industry. The consortium is a unique opportunity to accelerate OpenUSD collaboration globally to enable the 3D world and digitize industry by establishing a formal standard across industries and initiatives."

"Whether you're building a CG world, a digital twin, or envisioning the future of the 3D web, content creators need a coordinated way to leverage tools, services, and Collaborate and share data between platforms. Autodesk is excited to support the Alliance for OpenUSD to advance 3D interoperability beyond visual effects, animation, and more, and to support our vision of helping customers design and create a better world."
