Ex-Oculus, Niantic, and Magic Leap talent creates MR game studio Windup Minds

New studio Windup Minds, which brings together talent from Oculus, Niantic, Magic Leap and more, hopes to bring virtual beings to headsets.

The studio announced today a $1.6 million seed round to prepare for the launch of the first virtual and mixed reality device experience.

The studio's team brings together "veteran talent" from Oculus, EA, PopCap, Harmonix, Bungie, Magic Leap, Niantic, and more, with experience in Bogo, First Steps, First Contact, TheBlu, Stranger Things VR, Plants vs. Zombies, Destiny , Rock Band, Eternal Eye, and other major VR and flat screen launch projects.

According to a press release, Windup Minds is "deeply developing a virtual creature experience for mixed and virtual reality XR platforms." Windup's goal is to create evolved versions of the realm of virtual creatures like Tamogotchi, Sony's Aibo robot dog, and Shigeru Miyamoto's Nintendogs.

"Our relationship with dogs and cats is not just a pastime, it's part of the evolution of human society," Windup Mind CEO Bernard Yeh said in a prepared statement about why virtual creatures were being explored in particular.

Nader Yeh also talked about his early experience with VR development, and how the Dreamdeck demo at Oculus Connect influenced the Rift. "We saw players dragging off the prototype headset as our T-Rex approached them," Yeh said in a prepared statement. "They intellectually know they're in a little demo booth, but their intuitive brain tells them: 'There's a dinosaur in the room.' VR and MR can make your digital pet feel real like no other medium can." do it."
