PICO moves to gesture tracking, no longer focusing on controllers

在苹果VisionPro今年早些时候宣布之后,字节跳动旗下的PICO似乎正在把重点从控制器转向手部追踪。

Standalone headsets sold without controllers will revolutionize the VR industry. Apple's $3,500 product, which launches early next year, will mark that paradigm shift and be a departure from the "clumsy" controllers that shipped with all consumer-grade VR headsets in the 2010s. Instead, Apple opted for an entirely new interface based on a groundbreaking combination of eye and hand tracking.

对于PICO、HTC、MetaFor incumbent VR makers like PICO, HTC, Meta, Valve, and Sony, a $3,500 product may not pose much of a threat to their current status, but when Apple launches a smaller, lower-priced follow-up What happens when the product? Delivering an interface that transitions seamlessly from tracking objects to tracking fingers is an extremely difficult engineering problem for competitors, potentially holding back apps that aren't updated to support the new system.

Meta just rolled out an experimental feature on its high-end Quest Pro headset that enables simultaneous use of hand tracking and controllers, and Google-owned Owlchemy Labs hinted earlier this year that this is the future of VR input. HTC supports dual-mode functionality, too, but Meta's heavy investment in machine learning engineers and computer vision scientists has historically allowed the quality of its tracking technology to surpass the work of smaller rivals.

Standalone hand-tracking companies like Ultraleap may increase in value when Apple enters the fray, while underfunded platforms with existing controller gaming investments may struggle in the transition. HTC and PICO, for example, faced the daunting task of evolving their platforms with controllers as optional input systems, while also securing app releases from a small number of developers with the right mindset and implementation of advanced tools. Can these smaller competitors really hope to attract enough developers to compete with Meta and Apple?

In which regions is PICO planning to sell its next-gen headset? Is the product in each region equipped with a controller? How much is PICO prepared to invest in launching a premium gaming platform compatible with both input systems?
