According to reports, Google plans to provide system software for AR glasses starting in 2025.
Google reportedly plans to provide system software for augmented reality (AR) glasses to hardware companies starting in 2025.
In June of this year, Business Insider's Hugh Langley reported that Google canceled its glasses hardware project amid the company's massive layoffs and the departure of AR/VR head Clay Bavor. The hardware is said to be similar to regular glasses.
In a new report this week, Langley quoted a source as saying that "every six months there will be a major shift in the project." The shifts reportedly led to widespread frustration and even resignations. Last month, Google's director of engineering for the Android XR project, an experienced operating system expert, resigned from his job, citing "unstable commitment and vision from Google."
"It's a weird bureaucratic mess," one Google employee allegedly told Langley.
But it is reported that Google will continue its XR operating system project, but has no intention of releasing first-party hardware: Android "XR" for head-mounted displays and Android "Micro XR" for glasses. This would be similar to Google's current strategy of primarily smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and laptops.
In February, Samsung officially announced that it was working on an XR headset for which Google would provide the "software," and Google said it would share more information about the project later this year. However, that introduction may be delayed as Samsung is reportedly redesigning and upgrading the headset to take on the Apple Vision Pro. VisionPro.
Langley reported that Google is also looking for a hardware partner to launch "Android Micro XR" AR glasses as early as 2025. He claimed that "insiders speculated" that Samsung might also be the first partner for the glasses.
However, since the technology industry has been trying to bring transparent AR glasses from the realm of science fiction to real products for years, this timeline may be too optimistic.
据报道,苹果今年早些时候将其全面AR眼镜的发布日期“无限期推迟”,而Meta据称明年只能制造大约1000台先进的演示设备,然后在2027年推出降级的消费产品,比原计划晚三年。
