Asus Varjo provides XR tech for US Army training program

August 29, 2023 – Varjois a provider of professional-grade extended reality (XR) hardware and software, today announced that it has been selected by the U.S. Army Astronaut Program (RVCT Air Program) to provide head-mounted display (HMD) technology.

Varjo said the Air Force program aims to provide portable training capabilities for three different helicopters (Apache, Chinook and Blackhawk) and is part of the Army's effort to create a comprehensive training environment (STE) that can be used anywhere.

With the improved Varjo XR-3 Focal Edition capabilities, U.S. Army pilots will be able to utilize Varjo’s human-eye-resolution displays combined with video see-through technology to train in a fully immersive training environment that interacts with actual controls in real time. Varjo pointed out that the helmet has advanced video see-through capabilities, performs well in low-light and bright environments, and allows for long-term deep immersion, and can simulate night-time flight scenarios. Regarding safety, Varjo emphasized that the RVCT also offers a high level of safety, as the helmets are TAA-certified products made in Finland and do not have radio frequencies.

Seppo Aaltonen, Chief Commercial Officer at Varjo, said: "We are proud to partner with the US Army to create the world's first aerial training based on video see-through mixed reality at this quality and scale. Mixed reality technology can reduce overall defense training costs, Increase training flexibility and improve the ability to adapt to any operating environment."
