Meta reportedly teaming up with LG for 2025 Quest Pro successor

According to reports,Meta据称与LG合作推出Quest Pro的继任者。

In November last year, South Korean news outlet SBS Biz reported that Meta had entered into negotiations with LG Display to obtain the supply of OLED microdisplays for future head-mounted devices. Microdisplays have higher pixel density, allowing for higher resolution, more compact headsets.

From Maeil Business Newspaper, another Korean news outletnew reportIt shows that this cooperation has been expanded to work with multiple subsidiaries of the LG Group to jointly build future Quest Pro headsets.

LG Electronics will reportedly undertake production, using displays from LG Display, batteries from LG Energy, and other components from LG Innotek. It is said that the first product of this cooperation is expected to be released in 2025 and will sell for about US$2,000.

This isn't the first time Meta has partnered with an experienced consumer electronics company to develop VR headsets. The Oculus Go is made by Xiaomi, and the Oculus Rift S is made and co-designed by Lenovo. In both cases, the headset features not only the partner company's logo on the side, but also Oculus branding on the front. It's unclear how LG's branding will appear on the 2025 headset.

This isn't the only major software-led tech company to team up with a Korean hardware company to develop an XR headset, either. In February of this year, Samsung announced that it was making a headset with Google's software.

The report also claims that Meta's budget headset (which has nothing to do with LG) that it reportedly plans to release in 2024 will be priced under $200, although even the 3-year-old Quest 2 is currently priced at $300, which seems reasonable. Hard to believe.

We reached out to Meta about the story and will update this article when we hear back.

In March, The Verge's Alex Heath said he saw an internal Meta roadmap, the company's CTO told employees that the 2024 Quest Pro successor was canceled, and the VP of virtual reality said a future successor It will be the next product in the Quest Pro series for a relatively long time. He reportedly described the "futuristic" headset as having high resolution for reading small fonts and realistic "Codec Avatars."

The LG partnership could be Meta's way to bring the headset to market early in response to the $3,500 Apple Vision Pro, which will ship in 2024 with a high-resolution Sony OLED microdisplay and realistic "Persona" avatar. plan.

The Apple Vision Pro will reportedly be limited in size to fewer than 500,000 units in its first year due to notable issues with production challenges, which could give Meta and LG time to bring their rivals to market. Samsung and Google are also said to be working on headsets priced around $2,000, so the market for high-end XR headsets could soon become an intense three-way battle.
