The ultra-miniature SteamVR headset “Bigscreen Beyond” is now shipping

Bigscreen Beyond has now begun shipping to its first U.S. pre-order customers.

Beyond is an ultra-small, ultra-lightweight SteamVR headset designed to provide truly comfortable conditions for long-term PC VR experiences. The main driver for its small size and light weight is the use of an OLED microdisplay, and the fact that each unit is customized to the buyer's face and eyes rather than the adjustable, iPhone-based 3D facial scan.

In late June, Bigscreen emailed its first U.S. customers a link to perform facial scans, saying it would take about 1-4 months to ship once production begins. A little over six weeks later, the first units have now begun shipping to these U.S. customers. The company hopes to eventually reduce this interval to 3-6 weeks.

Bigscreen is also currently accepting orders from the following 13 new countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. This is in addition to the countries already supported (US, UK, most of Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan).

Beyond's price starts at $1,000, or $32 per month, but it doesn't include an initial location tracker or controller. It uses the SteamVR tracking system, so you'll need at least onebase station, preferably two more, and its own input device, such as a Valve Index controller.

In early June, Bigscreen announced last-minute improvements to the lens that expanded the field of view for most people, increased central angle resolution, improved sharpness and focus range, and reduced visual artifacts like blur.

Bigscreen said it saw "huge growth" in pre-orders following that announcement and the unveiling of the Apple Vision Pro.

Bigscreen said it will ship tens of thousands of the headsets in the coming months, with international shipments starting in the fourth quarter of this year. It also said the audio lanyard attachment remains on track and that more details will be announced later this month.
