Demeo Battles, the PvP spin-off of Resolution Games' tabletop co-op dungeon adventure game Demeo, will be released on November 9th.
Announced a year ago, Demeo Battles converts the original co-op game mode into shorter matches consisting of 1v1 or 2v2 player versus player (PvP) battles. It adapted elements of Demeo's turn-based strategy, art style, hero characters, and monsters into a new competitive mode, along with a few key changes.
As with the original game, players will be able to choose seven heroes of different professions to play as in each game. In 1v1 matchups, each player will choose two heroes, while 2v2 matchups will consist of a team of two people, each choosing a hero and working together to defeat the opposing team.
Prior to the start of each round, players also get to choose the lineup of ability-based cards they'll use in the match, as well as the Demeo monsters that will fight alongside their team.
Matches will be played on 10 new maps designed specifically for PvP play. For those who have played Demeo before, Battles will follow a similar turn-based format, where players will take turns controlling their heroes, after which each team's computer-controlled monster will attack the enemy team.
Battles also introduces a new mechanic called "Scorch", which is an ever-spreading stream of lava that starts at the edge of the game and moves towards the center. This forces players to fight in tight spaces, augmenting and advancing combat actions as the round progresses.
Demeo Battles will be released on Quest headsets and PC VR on November 9, with full mixed reality support for the former available at launch. The Steam version on PC supports both VR and non-VR modes, meaning PC gamers can purchase a copy of the game and switch between the flat screen or PC VR at will.
In addition to the release date announcement, Resolution Games also released a full live video of the game with Jerry Holkins (Tycho) and Mike Krahulik (Gabe) from Penny Arcade embedded on it. Unfortunately, the actual gameplay footage shows the flat screen PC version of Battles, not the VR gameplay footage. Nonetheless, matches are played the same way in both the VR and flat screen versions, so if you want to see a full round of a Battles match from start to finish, it might be worth checking out.
