Varjo Aero just got a permanent price reduction.
Aero, a PC VR headset that connects to a computer and launches in 2021, is the consumer product with the highest corner resolution on the market, a position it held until the Pimax Crystal began shipping in May. All of Varjo's previous headsets were for businesses - the Aero is a new direction in consumer-oriented sales.
It features a 2880 x 2720 pixel LCD display with an aspherical lens with a horizontal field of view of up to 115°, and eye-tracking capabilities that support automatic IPD adjustment and focus rendering in the software.
However, like Bigscreen Beyond, Varjo Aero requires a SteamVR tracking base station (purchased separately) and does not include any controllers.
Aspherical lenses offer greater clarity than the Fresnel lenses used in most VR headsets, but also introduce geometric distortion.
In our review of the Varjo Aero, we praised the headset's striking sharpness and the realism it achieves, its relatively wide field of view, and the comfort provided by its hybrid headband design.
However, we were unhappy with the head unit's curved distortion and pointed out the unnatural shape of the lens, which exhibits a rigid horizontal truncation at the bottom.
Now, for just $990, you can buy a Varjo Aero with a base station and Index controller for the same price as the Pimax Crystal, which has built-in tracking and comes with a controller. The Aero configuration should result in better tracking quality, but the Crystal promises to have localized dimming and wireless modes, and Pimax claims its lenses won't suffer the same distortion as the Varjo headset - though we've yet to verify that claim.
