MetaMeta is working hard on the Quest 3's mixed reality technology, but former Oculus CTO John Carmack is skeptical.
We've known for months about Meta's ambitions for the Quest 3's mixed reality technology, which were detailed in more detail at last week's Connect conference. But Carmack was quick to raise concerns about the focus on mixed reality technology, leaving Meta in December, citing the need for "instant VR." Without mentioning the Quest 3, Carmack said mixed reality technology has a lot of uses in "a lot of specific trainings," but said the potential for large-scale markets was questionable.
The following isfull statement:
I'm still not convinced that mixed reality applications will be the engine that increases head-mounted display sales. High-quality penetration is great, but I don't think applications centered around integrating rendering with real-world environments are killer applications. I think it's an interesting and challenging technique for finding rationalizations.
The power of VR lies in replacing the real environment with a superior environment, rather than having a virtual screen suspended over your real environment. In all the highly produced videos showcasing the future of mixed reality technology, the environments are always sleek, clean, and spacious. This is not representative of the real world user population.
There is certainly some value in these efforts, but I've always believed that there are more low-risk projects that could come first.
Carmack did not completely reject mixed reality technology. Later, clarifyhis intention. The former CTO added: “I’m talking about mixed reality applications on today’s head-mounted displays — the kind of fabled all-day wearable augmented reality glasses that would be available if they existed at an affordable price. more important." He alsosayPerspectives are "extremely valuable when instant, intuitive and high-resolution," but applications that interact with the environment are not believed to have the general value needed for the short-term market for head-mounted displays.
Connect showcases Quest 3’s powerful push for mixed reality technology. Meta showed off a variety of mixed reality and virtual reality games for the upcoming headset, announcing that more than "100 new and upgraded titles" will be coming to Quest 3, with more than 50 previously released games getting upgrades and Mixed reality capabilities.
