If the battery were external, the Quest 3 would be lighter, but not necessarily as much as one might think.
Earlier this week, we highlighted iFixit's Quest 3 teardown that revealed the battery takes up nearly all of the internal component space when the front cover is removed.
In our review of the Quest 3, we noted that it weighs 397 grams without the facial interface and straps. This means the battery only accounts for the weight of the 16%.
Of course, that 397-gram figure includes the side arms and speakers, which you won't feel in front of your face. If you take them off, the number could be between 20% and 25%. But even after removing the battery from the shutter, there's not the noticeable weight difference one would expect.
A way to make the shutter lighter might be to remove the computing hardware from the shutter. From a realistic engineering perspective, this is a more complex task that will likely require a thick and expensive connection unit to connect the computing unit to the sensors and display. This computing unit will almost certainly need to be larger and thicker than a phone, due to the need for a larger battery and cooling fans to support a sustained high-performance AR experience. For example, Magic Leap 2's computing unit is more like a belt bag than some ideal little disc.
Of course, looking at other aspects, we may also see a reduction in helmet visor weight. For example, OLED microdisplays are lighter than small LCD panels because they have a higher pixel density and don't require a separate backlight layer. Additionally, while headsets like the Quest 3 are optimized for maximum performance, in the future we may see weight-optimized headsets with lower-clocked chipsets and lighter cooling, perhaps even One day there will be fanless designs.
Currently, as we mentioned in our review, thinner helmets like the Quest 3 are less lightweight even though they're not actually lighter.FeelMuch lighter because their weight is closer to your face. With either the official Elite Strap or a host of cheaper third-party alternatives, you can now find a setup that will make you feel reasonably comfortable in VR and last for hours on end.
