Sony executives reconfirmed that PSVR 2 is important to us, but explained that it's not the "core proposition" of the season.

In a recent (paid) interview with Barron's, PlayStation head of global marketing, sales and business operations Eric Lempel was asked about the sales prospects of PS5 and PSVR 2 this holiday season. He called the PS5's prospects "very strong," called VR a "category that can help innovate," and then called the PS5 a core focus.

Here is the full quote:

For us, the VR category is very important. It is a category that helps us innovate. There will never be more than one way to play a game, but I'm glad we're getting into it. We can have a great experience and consumers really love it. But for us, this is still a nascent business. We want to be a part of that, but that’s not our core proposition for this season. PlayStation 5 is the core.

Lempel's comments aren't particularly surprising, considering VR is still struggling to gain mainstream acceptance. In May this year, Sony confirmed that PSVR 2 had sold 600,000 units from its launch in late February to April, while PS5 exceeded 40 million units in July after its launch in November 2020. Although PSVR 2 requires a PS5, the two aren't directly comparable, but it's easy to see why Sony is focusing on the PS5.

Despite a strong launch lineup with Horizon, Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village, and more, the PSVR 2's game library has been criticized since launch. Firewall Ultra received mixed reviews in August, with no first-party games yet to be revealed, and the recent temporary indefinite delays of Vertigo 2 and Phasmophobia have only deepened dissatisfaction.

With the recent launch of the Quest 3, these issues have become even more apparent, and Lempel's comments may not be encouraging to existing PSVR 2 owners.
