Immersed is upgrading its 4K Visor headset ahead of launch in 2024, adding a standalone mode, AI assistant, and more. The limited-time Black Friday price is still $750.
Immersed Visor is a lightweight monocular 4K VR headset with eye, hand and head tracking. When the Visor was released in August, it was a PC VR headset that required a computer connection.
We learned in September that the Visor is said to have a very clear pass-through camera so you can see your surroundings. It connects to your computer via USB-C, but also works wirelessly. Immersed has developed an external battery pack with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities.
Now, Immersed adds a standalone mode with a built-in web browser, an immersive home theater mode, an AI assistant, and more. The limited-time price will still be $750, but will climb to $950 after Black Friday (November 24, 2023).
The question is whether the upgrade is worth the extra cost. Here are the details.
Immersed visor upgrade
Immersed visors are designed for increased productivity. In fact, it's designed to run just one native application, a well-reviewed virtual desktop application called Immersed.
The app connects to your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer so you can run the most powerful productivity apps in a multi-screen mixed reality view. Still, a single app sounds a bit limiting. With the latest upgrade, that has changed.
Visor will now include a web browser, immersive home theater and support for OpenXR applications. This means that Visor's single-eye 4K display can enable VR gaming.
There won't be an app store at launch, but you will be able to run other apps. I wouldn’t be surprised to see immersive app stores in the future as it would be beneficial for both developers and users.
Visor's battery life is 30 minutes. Immersed previously announced a battery with two hours of battery life and plans to launch a new battery with four hours of battery life, allowing you to stay away from your computer and use it longer in standalone mode.
The visor looks like sports sunglasses, complete with nose pads and a headset. The slim design looks great, but for long-term comfort, it also comes with a headband. Immersed has improved upon the original strap design and claims it sets a new standard in comfort. It turned out to be a simple strap. Immersed has yet to share images of the new design.
The prototype hasn't been shared widely yet, and we haven't heard any reports of long-term availability. Since Immersed claims the Visor will be as light as a phone, it should be much more comfortable than a typical VR headset, which weighs about a pound.
Every new tech product should feature artificial intelligence, with a “curator” assistant activated by a tap on the side of the immersive visor. Few details are known yet, but the press release states that artificial intelligence "can help you complete trivial Quests in a virtual environment, allowing you to focus on higher-value Quests with less energy."
Immersed also boasts that Visor has upgraded its trail cameras to achieve "incredibly high accuracy." The user interface will support pinch gestures as well as eye tracking.
Visor as a spatial computer
The problem with standalone VR headsets is that they tend to be underpowered. Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 is an excellent solution for low-power headsets and smart glasses. Even though the chip is outdated, many new products still choose it.
使用Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2的空间计算设备包括Nimo Planet的智能眼镜计算核心、Rokid‘s Station Pro,以及小米的AR Glass探索版。
The Immersed Visor will use the new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip. 这与以下应用中使用的高性能混合现实处理器相同: Meta的 Quest 3.Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2比原来的XR2快得多,但与苹果即将推出的Vision中的M2芯片相比慢 Pro。
Based on the available specs, the Visor should be powerful enough to run browser applications well enough to meet many productivity needs. The Quest 3 can be used as a laptop replacement for light office work, but the screen resolution is a bit low and some apps are unavailable. The biggest trouble is that Quest is its browser, which has pretty limited functionality.
However, the immersive visor does not rely on native applications and operates independently. If you need more performance or want to use a specific application not available natively, you can connect to any computer via cable or wirelessly.
As with any unreleased device, it's wise to use caution. Immersed is a respected software developer that relies on partnerships with Qualcomm, Intel, and an unnamed "tech giant" to build Visor. It sounds great on paper and looks good in photos, but we haven't tried the immersive visor yet and haven't heard of any third-party experiences with it.
If you're interested and can afford to spend $750 for the Standard Edition or $1,000 for the Founders Edition, you can get all of the above features at full price during the Black Friday sale. On November 25, 2023, the price will increase by $200 to $950 (Visor 4K) and $1,250 (Visor 4K FE).
