The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the use of wireless devices in the 6 GHz band. According to The Verge and Bloomberg, companies such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, Meta, and Qualcomm have applied to the FCC to use the 6 GHz frequency band in 2019, which was previously only open to mobile and utility companies.

Rules proposed by FCC Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel would now allow very low-power (VLP) devices to operate in the 850 MHz band at the request of technology companies. This includes smartphones, tablets, and mobile devices such as VR and AR headsets.

Signals will be limited to short ranges, such as within a room, to avoid interfering with permitted uses. Additionally, devices in geo-blocked areas can run at higher power.
