Microsoft is phasing out Windows Mixed Reality and will remove support for it from Windows

微软正在淘汰其Windows Mixed Reality PC VR平台。

Despite the name, all Windows MR headshots are really just virtual reality, and can be accessed through Microsoft'sSteamVR DriverCompatible with most SteamVR content.

All of the original Windows MR OEMs except Samsung used the same cheap single-panel LCD design with fixed lenses, while the Samsung Odyssey featured IPD tweaks and OLED panels that were used less than two years later in the HTC Vive Proand Oculus QuestIt is also used in the

But despite the fact that these LCD headshots sometimes sold for as low as $200, and despite Samsung offering (at the time) high-resolution OLED panels, Windows MR headshots have never been able to gain widespread popularity among PC VR gamers. In the Steam Hardware Survey, SteamVR usage of Windows MR headscreens was at about 101 TP3T, and is now at about 51 TP3T.

But why?

First, the tracking quality is prohibitive. While the Oculus Quest and most later built-in headshots use four spaced-out cameras to form a wide controller tracking range, the Windows MR headshots only have two front-facing cameras, severely limiting the range of hand movements that can be performed. HP's Reverb G2 adds two additional side cameras, but by the time it launches in 2020, it will be too late for Microsoft's platform.

Another major issue is the lack of user-friendliness in the controller design, which feels like it was designed as cheaply as possible. This is in stark contrast to Facebook's Oculus Touch and Valve's Index controllers, both of which are well loved by users.

In essence, Microsoft and its partners failed to provide many people with a good reason to buy one of the first Windows MR headscreens, and by the time HP launched the Reverb and its 2K panels, Facebook's standalone Oculus Quest line had begun to dominate VR hardware

The Quest headscreens ability to run in standalone or PC VR mode makes it the preferred headscreens for most buyers, albeit with less comfort and lower resolution than headscreens like the Reverb.

Microsoft announced this week that Windows Mixed Reality is now officially deprecated and will be "removed" from future versions of Windows. The deprecation includes the required Mixed Reality Portal app and SteamVR drivers. This means that when this removal occurs, existing owners of Windows MR headsets will need to use an older version of Windows to continue using them.

In recent years, Microsoft has turned its XR focus to its long-standing software partnership with Meta. This month, he introduced Xbox cloud game streaming and its office suite to Quest, and plans to bring Windows 365 in the future to stream virtualized full Windows 11 PCs from the cloud for a subscription fee.
