Encapsulating the large number of components such as micro projectors, biosensors and power electronics required for the above project into a small, comfortable lens was a huge challenge. That's why XPANCEO claims that they have brought together 40 scientists and engineers from top universities and research centers around the world.

Among other things, the team moved away from conventional techniques and used new low-dimensional materials as thin as atoms, advanced optics and nanophotonics, and transparent flexible conductors.

It is worth noting that this company announced in October this year that it had received a $40 million investment from Opportunity Ventures. This funding not only allowed them to start assembling prototypes into real devices, but also facilitated the construction of their cutting-edge laboratory, which covers an area of more than 250 square meters.

Now, XPANCEO has announced the official opening of its lab in Dubai and introduced three intermediate prototypes of smart contact lenses.

  • The team claims that the first prototype has a holographic lens with a resolution of 640×480 and a thickness of only 0.2 millimeters, which resembles human hair, while displaying images comparable to AR/VR headsets. Moreover, the lens is already comparable to traditional headsets and could be the only device with an infinite field of view.

  • They further noted that the second prototype demonstrates the ability to integrate small and precise biosensors, while the current focus is on achieving a high level of detection, thus supporting the analysis of tears and facilitating the measurement of glucose, cortisol and other hormone levels. Additionally, said sensors can measure eye vibrations or dimensional changes corresponding to different levels of heart rate, humidity or intraocular pressure.

  • As for the third prototype, XPANCEO says that this utilizes a technology (patent pending) based on a transparent flexible conductor of quasi-two dimensional gold. They claim that the conductor in question is the thinnest in the world and allows for the integration of various electronic components into the lens without sacrificing transparency, flexibility or thickness. From power components to electrochemical sensors, this technology creates a platform that seamlessly integrates any detail into the lens.
