VR sector: New process meets Pancake's high-performance requirements

Optical modules with Pancake short-focus folding optical technology have become the mainstream choice for VR optical display solutions in the industry because they meet the trend of lightweight VR headsets. In response to the ever-increasing demand for Pancake module performance and relying on its profound accumulation in the field of optical display, Geer Optical launched the high-performance Pancake display module Star M41 at this year's CES, on which Geer Optical, together with 3M, has adopted the in-mold injection molding technology based on COC material for the first time.

Compared to the curved surface lamination process, the Star M41 puts 3M's newly developed film in the mold for simultaneous injection, which simplifies the process, provides higher freedom of lens design, greatly reduces the surface roughness of the lens and improves the orange peel phenomenon. This technology expands the process route of curved surface lamination and provides an innovative technology iteration path for the industry.
The module's FOV is raised to 105°, and ALD (Atomic Layer Deposition) coating technology can also be introduced according to customized needs, effectively reducing ghosting and improving VR display effect significantly.
In addition to the Star M41 module, Gore Optics also displayed two other Pancake display modules: the Star C31 and Star P31, both of which utilize the industry's leading curved adhesive bonding technology and the industry's more mature flat surface lamination technology. Among them, Star P31 adopts ALD coating to effectively reduce ghosting and upgrade performance.

It is understood that the Pancake display modules on display can be adapted to 4K high-definition Micro-OLEDThe screen can meet the needs of audio-visual entertainment, video conferencing, business office and other application scenarios that require high VR display performance.

As the world's first manufacturer to achieve mass production of Pancake display modules, Gehl Optical will continue to make all-around layout on Pancake process, from low-stress injection molding, flat lamination, curved lamination, in-mold injection molding, PVD coating to ALD coating, as well as vision-guided assembly and AA assembly, to satisfy customers' requirements from R&D to production of the whole chain and differentiation.

AR field: focusing on small size, ultra-high brightness, full-color display

In the field of AR optical display, the current industry mainly focuses on optical waveguide technology as the core, and explores optical upgrading around lighter, thinner, larger field of view, and full-color display. With rich experience in design and development of optical machines and optical waveguide, Gore Optics has gained deep insight into the optical upgrade of AR optical display.marketDemand, and constantly realize technological breakthroughs, developed a variety of new upgraded full-color diffractive optical waveguide display modules, the main small size, ultra-high brightness and other characteristics. These advanced products, which meet the market demand, are exhibited at this year's show.

Among them, Star E, a 30°FOV single-layer full-color diffractive optical waveguide display module, successfully breaks through the high refractive index grating processing technology, and through the optimized design of grating materials and structure, it can achieve the brightness of the eye higher than 1,000nits, with a leakage of less than 13%, and the rainbow pattern has been greatly improved.Star E also introduces the electrocromorphic technology, and the transmittance is adjustable from 10% to 90%, suitable for different lighting environment scenes. 90% adjustable, suitable for different light environment scenarios, while using customized myopia lenses to achieve a comfortable visual experience. The display module is based on a 0.14-inch LCoS solution with a folded polarized optical architecture and a volume of less than 1cc.

Gore Optics also announced the industry's smallest optical fiber that can be adapted to large FOV optical waveguides. The optic adopts the industry's latest 0.23-inch LCoS solution, with a high resolution of 1560×1200, can be adapted to 46° FOV optical waveguide (upgradeable to 53° FOV), and through the design of the polarization folding optical path, the volume is compressed to about 1cc and the weight is about 3 g. In addition, after professional optical optimization, the optic solves the problem of the LCoS solution's low contrast ratio, and can help AR glasses achieve a better display effect, which is suitable for large field of view applications. help AR glasses realize better display effect, suitable for large field of view angle multi-scene applications.

Vehicle-mounted, micro-projection field: on-site demonstration of the actual use of the effect

At this year's show, Gehl Optical also exhibited the PGU module PGU4620 Gen2 for in-vehicle AR-HUD, which, compared to the traditional PGU4620 module, has a brightness increase of 80% to 200lm, which can meet the demand for displaying in a larger Eyebox area; combined with the next-generation DLPC technology, it can realize a high refresh rate of 120Hz, high contrast ratio of 1800:1, and high color gamut to make the HUD display better; the module structure adopts a modular design, which can be quickly adjusted and developed according to the demand, and accelerate the product launch cycle. 1800:1, and high color gamut, so that the HUD machine display effect is better; module structure adopts modular design, can be quickly adjusted according to the needs of the development, shorten the HUD machine R & D cycle, accelerate the product launch.

Gore Optics also exhibited free-form mirrors and cold light mirrors that can be applied to AR-HUD. The free-form mirror has the advantages of large size, high precision and high reliability, which can effectively guarantee the imaging effect and mass production quality of AR-HUD; the infrared cut-off film used in the cold mirror adopts the coating process independently researched and developed by Geer Optics, which has the advantages of wide incidence, no color deviation, high temperature resistance, etc., and can effectively reduce the risk of sunlight backflooding.

Exhibitors can experience the actual display effect of the curved mirror and PGU module applied to the whole vehicle HUD at the exhibition site.

In the field of micro-projection, Gore Optics exhibited a full range of optical modules covering different chip sizes (from 0.2 to 0.47 inches) and lens types (ultra-short focus to telephoto).

Geer Optics began to develop DLP optical modules in 2017, with a full set of DLP optical module solutions from optical system design, precision optical measurement to automatic assembly of components, has realized the mass production of a variety of DLP projection optical modules, and has accumulated a wealth of experience in research and development and manufacturing. At the exhibition site, Gore Optics, which is full of confidence, also specially displayed a mass-produced projector using its self-developed optical projector. The projector for the 4K resolution, the optical machine uses the latest panchromatic LED light source, the lens consists of a metal lens barrel and all-glass lens, brightness of 1700lm, contrast ratio of more than 400:1, the picture is no thermal defocus, have a clear picture, colorful, low noise and other characteristics, the indicators are in the industry's leading level, the family, education, meetings and other multi-scene can be used.

As a pioneer in the global XR industry, Gehl Optics will be committed to providing one-stop solutions for optical R&D and manufacturing in VR/AR and other fields, creating more value for customers, society and the industry.
