Years ago, Karim Morsy, co-founder and CEO of Algoriddim, was in the early stages of his DJ career, performing atop a castle tower on the Italian coast. Below him, the crowd danced amidst the ruins, and in front of him was the moonlit, endless coastline and the Mediterranean Sea. "It was an environment where inspiration was unleashed," says Morsy, who may have grossly underestimated it.

For nearly 20 years, Morsy and Algoriddim have been working to recreate that live DJ experience with their App djay. This first-class DJ App started out as boxed software for the Mac, and subsequent versions for the iPad offer features such as virtual turntables and beat matching. The App has been a huge success, winning Apple Design Awards in 2011 and 2016.

He also says that the Apple Vision Pro has made his dream come true: "I was very excited when I first experienced this device. I've always wanted to be a DJ since I was a kid, and all of a sudden the turntables, the night sky, the stars overhead, the light show in the desert, and so on all came together at once. I was like, 'This is the pinnacle. This is the feeling I've always wanted people to experience.'"

Reaching this pinnacle required what Morsy calls "the maddest sprint of a lifetime." In exploring the 360-degree canvas, the team rethought the entire process of how people interact with djay.

We realized that in building DJ interfaces for decades, we took a lot of things for granted," he said. So the first part of designing for Apple Vision Pro was to go back to the draft drawing board and think, 'Okay, maybe this design made sense for a computer and a mouse 10 years ago, but why do we need it now?' Why do people have to push buttons to match the rhythm. Shouldn't this be a smooth and seamless experience?' We can abstract a lot of things."

They also considered the environment. djay offers window views, shared spaces that bring 3D carousels into the environment, and multiple forms of fully immersive experiences. The app first opens to a window view, a simple user interface consisting of two panels, which is intimate and familiar to those using the iPad App. The Space Container view not only brings the carousel into the user's room, but also brings in a key element of the App: the floating 3D cube that acts as a control panel for the djay effect.

It's a scene where people can really experience reacting to and being inspired by their environment. There's an LED wall that displays the colors of the current artwork (the song being played), a nighttime desert scene around a lighted arena, and a space lounge complete with dancing robots and a view of the Earth. The goal of these environments is to create the "state of mind flow" that live DJs are looking for. He notes, "You want to get into a loop where the environment and you are sensing and influencing each other."

At the end of the day, this brilliant use of technology has a very simple purpose: to interact with the music of your choice. morsy, himself a musician, points to a piano in his office and says: "pianos have had the same interface for hundreds of years, and that's what we're trying to achieve, an optimal balance between sophistication and ease of use. the Vision djay on Pro is no longer just a musical instrument, it's an immersive experience."
