Apple previously announced that iPad and iPhone apps are available by default on the visionOS App Store and that developers must intentionally opt out.
Netflix does have a VR app on Meta Quest that provides a cozy cabin environment, but the app only has a maximum resolution of 480p and hasn't been updated in years. The app was developed in part by John Carmack in 2015 to provide support for Oculus-powered Samsung Gear VR devices.
The news comes as Apple confirmed this week that most of Netflix's major competitors will be available when Vision Pro launches, including Disney+, Max (formerly HBO Max), Amazon Prime Video, Discovery+, Paramount+ and Peacock.
The Disney+ visionOS app will even include four unique immersive environments: the theater at Hollywood's iconic El Capitan Theatre, the horror floor from the movie Monsters, Inc, Marvel's Avengers tower, and Luke Skywalker's flying machine cockpit on Tatooine.
In Apple's marketing for Vision Pro so far, it's clear that viewing traditional media on a giant virtual screen is a major focus. Users can choose to watch in a real room (with optional darkening), a completely virtual environment, or a mix of both. In addition to a host of 2D streaming content, Apple says the Vision Pro will have more than 150 3D movies available for viewing at launch.
However, some Vision Pro purchasers may struggle with watching full shows or movies, as early reviews suggest the device is very heavy, at least when using the default retention strap.
