At 5:16 a.m. (PT), less than 20 minutes after pre-orders opened, an Ohio-based MacRumors employee posted a screenshot showing a window of time for early March deliveries, which he said applied to the 512GB and 1TB models.

For some, this month-plus stocking time comes at a time when reliable supply chain analysts are claiming that Apple only has 60,000 to 80,000 units on Feb. 2VisionProThe Pro was produced the week after it was ready. While the system of deliveries by state blurs the picture a bit, I expect Apple to sell out of this batch before the end of the day.

Just before the Vision Pro was released, The Information's Wayne Ma reported that it would be Apple's most complex device ever, with many of the components fitted tightly under a curved, three-dimensionally shaped glass panel that reportedly posed challenges for production workers. Those challenges led to the initial plan for the manufacturer to hand the project over in 2022 after more than four years of preparation.

However, the Financial Times also reports that the main constraints to Vision Pro production are the difficulty and higher cost of manufacturing its nearly 4K OLED microdisplays from Sony and low production volumes.

Korean tech news outlet The Elec reports that Sony can only produce a maximum of 900,000 microdisplays per year, so Apple needs two displays per headset, limiting production of the Vision Pro to less than 500,000 units. The Financial Times also reports that Apple is not happy with Sony's microdisplay output, which has a zero defect rate.

OLED microdisplays are fabricated directly on silicon wafers, a very different process from the manufacturing of smartphone- or TV-sized OLED panels. While this basic technology is not new per se, until recently it was primarily used only in low-volume products such as high-end camera viewfinders and on certain industrial smart glasses. Mass production of nearly 4K OLED microdisplays didn't begin until this year.

A Chinese supply chain analytics startup estimated that each nearly 4K microdisplay costs $350 to Apple and two for $700, reflecting low capacity and production.

According to the Financial Times, Apple is in talks with other OLED microdisplay suppliers to increase production capacity and reduce costs. However, for the first-generation Vision Pro, supply will remain limited. As a result, if demand remains strong after this initial surge, the backlog could continue for months.
