In one embodiment, the display system is configured to direct a plurality of parallax-differentiated intrapupillary images to the user's eye. The parallax-different intra-pupil images provide different parallax views of the virtual object and hit the pupil from different angles. Overall, the light wavefront that forms the image approximates a continuous evanescent wavefront and provides the user with selectable adjustment cues based on the amount of parallax between the intra-pupil images. The amount of parallax can be selected using an array of shutters that selectively adjust the image light into the eye. Each open shutter in the array provides a different intrapupillary image, and the position of the open shutters provides the desired amount of parallax between images. In other embodiments, the images may be formed by emitting microdisplays. Each pixel formed by the microdisplay may be formed by one of a set of optical emitters. The emitters are located at different positions such that the emitted light reaches the eye via different paths, the different paths providing different amounts of parallax.
