15 Tips and Setup Advice for Apple Vision Pro

1. FaceTime with a friend who doesn't have an Apple device

Vision Pro的FaceTime是一个很棒的功能,而令人惊讶的是,你可以和没有苹果设备的朋友聊天。使用邀请链接,朋友们可以在他们的Android手机、Windows电脑等任何现代浏览器加入。

  1. Open the application menu in the head unit (press the digital knob once)

  2. On the left side of the app menu, select People (an icon that looks like the outline of two people).

  3. In the upper left corner of People, select New Link.

  4. Send the relevant link to the person you want to chat with.

  5. When they open the link, you'll get a notification in your headset that they want to join.

  6. "Join" the FaceTime call from the notification and then make sure to let them join the chat via the "People Waiting" menu.

From here, you can use most of the normal features you'd expect from FaceTime, including sharing your screen with them.

2. Recalibration in Vision Proeye trackingand IPD

Eye tracking is an important component of Vision Pro. Not only is it empowering the primary input of the headset, but it can be used to improve the image quality of the headset in real time. If you are having issues with inaccurate eye inputs or experiencing eye strain that you haven't had before, you should try recalibrating your eye tracking and IPD.

Adjusting eye tracking:

  1. Press the "Shutter Button" in the upper left corner of the Vision Pro four times quickly.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to recalibrate the eye tracking.

Recalibrate the IPD:

  1. Open settings in your headset (or "Hey Siri, open settings").

  2. Navigate to Eyes & Hands in Settings.

  3. At Eyes & Hands select Rearrange to show Realign Displays.

Since the accuracy of eye tracking depends on the position of the headgear against the face, it is more likely to require occasional recalibration than IPDs.

3. Move all Windows and applications to view

In Vision Pro, you can have windows and applications floating around your home, which feels amazing. But the funny thing is that sometimes you can "lose" it because you forget where you put it. Sometimes this means that you'll try to launch an app, but it won't seem to open because it's already open somewhere and you just forgot to find it. Fortunately, there is a way to recall all your apps and windows.

  1. Press and hold the digital knob at the top right of the Vision Pro for a few seconds.

  2. This will bring all open apps to you.

Doing so also "repositions" your point of view. Fully immersive apps remember their "orientation" when opened, allowing developers to put the most important content in front of you. But this can sometimes be a problem (e.g. if you need to turn your chair around, or move from one part of the room to another). Pressing and holding the digital knob will reset the app's positive orientation to in front of you and put you back in the center of the app's content.

4. Rapid minimization of applications and environments

While you can use the digital knob to adjust immersion up and down, sometimes you just want to take a quick look at the real world and don't want to move the window or turn the digital knob. Luckily, there's just one simple shortcut to do just that.

Quick Minimize:

  1. Quickly press the digital knob at the top right of the Vision Pro twice.

  2. To recover all applications and environments, press the digital knob once.

5. Taking screenshots or recording in Vision Pro

Just like your cell phone, you can take screenshots or videos of everything you see in Vision Pro.

Screenshot:

  1. Put on the headset and simultaneously press and release the buttons and digital knobs on the top left side of the headset

  2. Your screenshot is saved to Photos

Tip: Vision Pro will blur the area around your line of sight, so make sure your eyes are on the part you want to shoot.

Recording screen:

  1. With the headset on, tilt your head up and your eyes up until you see a small dot, select it and open the control center.

  2. Select the icon that looks like two slide switches.

  3. In the next screen, select the icon that looks like a solid circle inside a hollow circle.

  4. To stop recording, press the button on the top left of the head unit, or go to the Control Center and select Stop.

Tip: By default, screen recording does not capture audio. To capture audio in Vision Pro, follow the steps above, but when you select the Screen Recording button (hollow circle with a solid circle inside), tap and hold. This will bring up another menu whereas you can choose to enable the microphone.

6. Useful Siri commands

Siri can do all the daily tasks you'd expect, but there are a few commands that are useful for Vision Pro.

Launch the app to create a quick workspace:

  1. Say "Hey Siri, launch (XXX app name)" and the app will launch in any direction you look. This makes it easy to quickly set up apps around you. For example, look forward and say "Launch Safari". Then, look to the left and say "Launch Messages". Next, look to the right and say "Launch Music".

Change the environment and switch between day and night:

  1. You can ask Siri to turn on immersive backgrounds. When you activate Siri, just say "Take me to the moon" or "Take me to Mt. Hood".

  2. Then, change the time of day by saying "It's nighttime" or "It's daytime".

A quick look at the time:

This feature isn't exclusive to the Vision Pro, but since the only way to see the time is to view and open the Control Center, it's sometimes faster and easier to use Siri. Just activate Siri and say "What time is it?" If there's a time zone issue, you can also add a location, such as "What time is it in London".

7. Streaming and sharing applications via FaceTime

While it's possible to project the entire view to Vision Pro, you can also stream or cast individual apps via FaceTime. This is useful for things like listening to music, watching movies, or getting feedback on slide presentations.

  1. Join a FaceTime call with a friend.

  2. In a supported application, press the SharePlay button that appears at the top of the application window, which will start streaming the application.

If the app supports it, all FaceTime participants will see your app window streaming in real time. You can even share via SafariYoutubeVideo.

Specific apps have deeper SharePlay integration, which prompts FaceTime participants to launch the app on their device and then synchronize playback. However, the app in question may require everyone to subscribe.

8. Screen casting

If you want someone in the same room as you to see what you're seeing in the headset, you can cast the screen to a nearby MacBook, iphone, iPad, or AirPlay-enabled TV. Whichever device you use, make sure it's on the same Wi-Fi network as your headset.

Activate mirror casting:

  1. In the headset, tilt your head up and look upwards with your eyes until you see a small dot, select it to open the control center.

  2. Select the icon that looks like two slide switches.

  3. Select the icon that looks like two overlapping squares.

  4. Select the device to cast the screen.

Casting screen iPhone or iPad:

  1. By default, AirPlay may not be enabled on iPhones and iPads.

  2. Fix this issue by selecting Settings → General → Spaced Play on your iPhone or iPad in order.

  3. Make sure to turn on "AirPlay Receiver" and follow the "Activate Mirror Cast" steps above.

Cast screen to Mac or MacBook:

  1. By default, your Mac or MacBook should have AirPlay enabled and should appear in the list of casting devices.

  2. If not, go to System Settings → General → Spaced Play at your computer (macOS 12 or earlier may require going to System Preferences → Sharing)

  3. Make sure to turn on "AirPlay Receiver" and follow the "Activate Mirror Cast" steps above.

Casting to AirPlay-enabled TVs:

  1. By default, your Apple TV (and some non-Apple TVs with built-in AirPlay) should have AirPlay enabled and should appear in the list of casting devices.

  2. If not, go to Settings → AirPlay and HomeKit on Apple TV.

  3. Make sure to turn on "AirPlay Receiver" and follow the "Activate Mirror Cast" steps above.

Please note that when using Vision Pro, specific apps (especially apps like Disney+) will display a blank window. This is copyright related.

9. Share your point of view via FaceTime

You can share your surroundings (as seen through the camera) and the apps in your headset via FaceTime so others can see what you're seeing remotely.

  1. While you're on a FaceTime call, tap another participant's view to display the options overlay.

  2. Select the view sharing icon (which looks like a photo frame with rounded corners) to start casting the view to the screen.

  3. Another participant will be able to see everything in the field of view, such as your home, hands, and the window you have open in Vision Pro.

10. Spotlight search and launcher

If you've ever used a Mac computer, you're probably familiar with Spotlight, the built-in launcher that makes it quick and easy to open and switch between apps. iPhones and iPads have similar features, as does Vision Pro. It's easy and useful to open Spotlight with a keyboard in Vision Pro, but it's slow and cumbersome without one.

Use the keyboard to open a Spotlight search for Vision Pro:

  1. Open Spotlight by pressing cmd+space (same keyboard shortcut as Mac)

Open a Spotlight search in Vision Pro:

  1. Tilt your head upward and look upward with your eyes until you see a small dot, select it to open the control center.

  2. Select the icon that looks like two slide switches.

  3. Select the icon that looks like a magnifying glass

11. Force quit applications on Vision Pro

Sometimes apps have problems and the only way to fix them is to force close and restart.

  1. Simultaneously press and hold the button on the top left of the head unit and the digital knob until you see the force exit menu appear.

  2. Select the app you want to close and then choose Force Quit.

12. Turning off the head-up display

While it's safe to simply disconnect the battery pack, you can turn off Vision Pro through the software itself.

  1. Press and hold the button on the top left of the head unit and the digital knob at the same time.

  2. Use the power slider to turn off the power.

Tip: You can say "Hey Siri, shut down."

13. Force restart of Vision Pro

Sometimes the head unit will have issues and you won't be able to shut it down properly, but luckily you can force it to restart.

  1. Press and hold both the top left button of the head unit and the digital knob at the same time, even when you see the "Force Exit" menu appear.

  2. Keep holding the button until the screen goes black.

Tip: You can say "Hey Siri, reboot."

14. Deleting and uninstalling applications

Uninstalling apps in Vision Pro works similarly to what you'd expect on an iPhone or iPad.

  1. Open the application menu in the head unit (press the digital knob once).

  2. Long press the app you want to uninstall.

  3. Select Remove App to uninstall.

15. Headsets shared with guest users

While you can hand someone the headset and tell them your password to get started, Guest Mode will temporarily calibrate the headset for another user. This is important because accurate eye tracking and IPD calibration are important to the functionality and comfort of the Vision Pro. Guest mode also allows you to control what apps other people can see, so you can make sure they don't see your messages, browsing history, etc.

Activate guest mode:

  1. Tilt your head upward and look upward with your eyes until you see a small dot, select it to open the control center.

  2. Click on the Guest User icon in the Control Center (looks like a person in a dotted line).

  3. Select the applications that guest users see

  4. In Guest Mode, you can choose whether you want the user to be able to use all of the headset's apps or only the currently open app.

Converts the guest user view:

  1. You also have the option to start casting the headset view to a nearby Mac computer, iPhone, or AirPlay TV.

  2. You can choose to send the sound through an AirPlay device or headset

After Guest Mode is activated, remove the headset and hand it to the new user. Once on, they will be prompted to go through the calibration process. When they remove the headset, Guest Mode will be automatically disabled and Vision Pro will return to your settings.
