Stranger Things VRoffered groundbreaking studio Tender Claws the opportunity to adopt one of the beloved titles on Netflix for VR. How well did they do? Here's our review.
Stranger Things VR offers an engaging storyline that stays true to the spirit of the original script, only this time you play as the villainous Vecna.Unfortunately, the journey can also quickly become repetitive and tedious, more like indulging in a walking simulator to traverse the inverted world.
Stranger Things VR is set mostly in the upside down world and does a fantastic job of making you feel like you're part of that world. It lets you appreciate a small part of the twisted story of how Vecna came to be. At the same time, it's reassuring that the experience isn't entirely limited to this dark, dreary alternate dimension, as you're also treated to familiar locations and animated versions of the show's characters throughout.
The gameplay and movement is immersive and intuitive. Controlling the supernatural vines is easy to pick up and it feels great to leap high into the air on your own. The presentation of Stranger Things VR is also excellent, looking great on Quest 3, and some beautifully drawn bits of the movie's narrative make it look like a comic book.
I was often mesmerized by the events going on around me, or by the massive scale and see-through nature of certain parts. The eerie sounds of the inverted world and the iconic Stranger Things 80's synth music add to the even darker and more frightening atmosphere.
The voice acting here is uneven. The developers have brought in Matthew Modine as Dr. Brenner and Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna to voice characters from the TV series. However, I wish there was more original dialog for the other characters on the show, but they are mostly presented through recorded sound bites and voiceovers that don't match the original actors' voices.
Stranger Things VR has a lot going for it, but there are still imperfections. And about that nightmarish walking simulator? The main focus of the game seems to be simply taking you to the next movie sequence, which quickly becomes repetitive and tedious. For example, one of the game's core elements is a mechanic known as mind invasion. These scenes involve you probing the minds of other characters to reveal their secrets, and they are a key part of the story. However, they often involve solving similar puzzles or overcoming the same challenges, which makes the game boring. Combat also feels like a one-trick pony, where you can grab random environmental objects with your mind and throw them at enemies, or grab smaller enemies with your mind and crush them. As an 8-foot-tall villain with superpowers, I wish there were more combat styles to choose from and that Tender Claws could have done more.
In terms of story pacing, just when I sensed the exciting part was coming, it suddenly stopped and the credits started rolling. Whether or not I was actually at the end as I stood there left me wondering. Stranger Things VR is divided into nine chapters, some of which are quite short, which means you may finish the game in one focused play session.
comfortableness
Stranger Things VR can be played sitting or standing, and it defaults to fast steering and a restricted field of view in intense motion. We didn't see any blinking or teleporting forward movement system with regards to walking, and the vine movement sections can be pretty intense. There's an option to assign some of the game's gesture-based control sequences to the B or Y buttons on the controller.Tender Claws adds the ability to turn off the comfort setting and select fully smooth steering and no field-of-view occlusion for more active movement.
The mixed reality levels in Stranger Things VR are an added bonus, adding a slightly more interesting perspective to the experience. Unfortunately, they don't live up to expectations. Since they take place in your own game space, the segments do offer a unique visual perspective, but they don't seem to have any connection to the actual plot. This makes sense, as they're only playable once you've completed the game's plot, but presenting it in this way makes the addition feel like a pure gimmick. The levels don't actually have any bearing on the VR storyline, and it definitely feels more like a superficial addition than anything else.
Stranger Things VR Review - Final Verdict
Stranger Things VR is a commendable effort from Tender Claws and a nice example of VR's potential as a narrative medium, allowing you to experience Hawkins and Upside Down in a whole new way that expands the Stranger Things universe. Unfortunately, all of this is limited by extremely repetitive gameplay elements and poor combat.
If you're a fan of the series and can overlook the fact that some of your favorite characters' voice actors aren't around, then you might enjoy this game while exploring Vecna's twisted mind while traveling through the inverted world. Even if you've never watched the Netflix series and just want a psychedelic and often creepy VR experience, you might want to consider trying Stranger Things VR.
