MetaMeta's servers are down, rendering all Quest headsets temporarily unavailable. Facebook, Instagram, Threads and the Quest platform have been inaccessible since about 7:30 a.m. PT. Attempts to access them result in login errors. Attempts to access them have resulted in login errors, and Meta's director of communications, Andy Stone, said the company is "aware" of the issue and is "working immediately to resolve it." Quest headsets don't need to be connected online at all times, even on networks where Meta servers are not accessible. The Quest headset doesn't require an always-on connection, and even on networks where Meta's servers aren't accessible, it can still provide basic functionality, such as playing single-player games. So what's happening here? Given that Facebook, Instagram, and Threads appear to have logged out all users, it looks like either Meta's servers have issued logout commands to all apps and devices, or client security checks have deemed the login token no longer secure. Whatever the reason, the Quest headset has logged out its users and returned to setup mode, even though that mode can't connect to Meta's servers. This isn't the first time VR users have woken up to find their headsets unusable due to a software issue. Back in 2018, every Oculus Rift stopped working due to an expired certificate. That issue took Meta (then Facebook) more than 12 hours to resolve - an issue many Quest owners wish had been resolved more quickly. This story is developing and can be updated with additional details as appropriate.
