Developers share: PC VR gaming is still a viable option, with far more performance than all-in-ones

VR Adventure Game 'Bootstrap Island' From Said Studio Arrives February 23, 2024SteamThe community rated it "exceptionally favorable" and hundreds of content creators' videos received millions of total views.

About three years ago, after years of working on custom VR projects, the team decided to start working on their own VR game called Bootstrap Island. They envisioned a survival game where players could forget about the everyday world in a lush, tropical environment. Physics-based interactions are not just for show, they also have gameplay depth, so features such as a dynamic day/night system, fire, liquids, AI, and even background voice-overs will be blended into an immersive "Robinson" style gameplay experience.

尽管团队认为以Quest 3为代表的VR一体机非常优秀,而且用户基数巨大,但由于性能问题,游戏的物理、环境设计、核心玩法、动画等依然受限于手机芯片组。

So in order to meet the game's goals, Maru VR Productions felt that PC VR was the only viable option. In the early stages of development, they certainly had thoughts of one day porting the game to the Quest platform. After all, it seemed like the smart choice from a business perspective. But as the game evolved, they no longer had that thought. the power difference between Quest and a powerful PC is a factor of 10.

The team emphasized, "Keep in mind that even PC VR games require a lot of effort in terms of optimization as compared to regular screen games, which are rendered on two screens at high frame rates. The stakes are very high because when the game doesn't run well or has poor graphics, it's not only an inconvenience from the user's point of view, but it can wreak havoc on their perception of reality."

Maru VR Productions says that Bootstrap Island players love interacting in the free open world of photorealism the most, and based on years of game development experience, they see the same results time and time again: people prefer high-fidelity VR content. Not only gamers, but even first-timers become more immersed in the VR world because the images, textures, and sounds of the experience are so realistic. If the illusion of virtual reality is more convincing, the user's reaction will become more intense and raw. As a result, we will see more PC VR users laughing, crying and screaming during immersive experiences.

In the end, the studio concluded, "After all, the point of virtual reality is to allow people the opportunity to step into a story and be completely immersed in a different world. As a gamer and creator, the birth of virtual reality is the most exciting thing we've seen in our lives. In our opinion, it's the closest thing to a magical experience we've ever had."
