VRAL GamesDeveloped by Funny Tales and published by VRAL Games, VRIDER combines arcade and simulation racing elements. Featuring single-player games with AI players, time trials, online multiplayer, and "ghost" races against other players' best laps, it features twelve circuits with all the racing teams for the 2023 season and five superbikes from Ducati, Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha, and BMW.

When I first heard about VRIDER, I was intrigued. I had never driven a real motorcycle before, and the same was true in VR. Between F1 23, GRID Legends, and Gran Turismo 7, I'm more accustomed to four-wheelers, but those experiences tend to be somewhat limited. I've always wanted more interactivity from the driver's seat, and that's something I've seen in theV-SpeedwayandNeodori Infinityand other places where it is found, but is rarely seen elsewhere.

Playing VRIDER at GDC 2024, I immediately noticed that it didn't opt for the standard joystick controls that many VR racing games have. You hold each Touch handle like a knob to steer, use the left trigger to brake, and the right trigger to accelerate, making for a pleasingly interactive experience.VRIDER also offers more realistic "twist" controls, which are appreciated by twisting each handle to accelerate and brake.

In my demo at Quest 3, I played two full races against nine other AI players, and those controls meant there was a bit of a learning curve to get used to. What's particularly nice is that VRIDER tries to simulate real motorcycle driving, not just put you on a motorcycle from a one-person perspective. Moving left and right provides more precise turns, while hiding behind the windshield increases acceleration. Just because you can't fall off your motorcycle by leaning too far doesn't mean you can't crash into walls or opponents.

Even in this preview version, VRIDER demonstrates a fair degree of refinement, and Funny Tales' solid VR-oriented design approach perfectly showcases Quest's immersive edge. The sound design further enhances this, such as hearing the wind as you get further from the center of the windshield. I was also told that the HUD is toggleable, while advanced option settings for simulation style include rear wheel grip or turning off the suggested racing line.

As for the performance differences, VRAL Games CEO and co-founder Rodolfo Saccoman said that the team has been working to ensure that the experience remains consistent between Quest 2 and Quest 3. While the publisher didn't confirm any specifics such as refresh rates, I've heard that Quest 3 owners can expect higher frame rates and finer in-game graphics.

VRIDER will be available on the Quest App Lab platform soon, while the full Quest Store version is scheduled for release in Summer 2024. In the early access phase, VRIDER will only include single-player content and a half-dozen tracks at a discounted price, and online multiplayer will not be available until the full version is released. The SteamVR version will be released in the fourth quarter of 2024.
