This suggests that the Quest 3 continued to sell well beyond its launch quarter, while the Quest 2 did not have as much follow-on sales momentum as the former. While the Quest 3 has a higher retention rate, this is almost certainly due to the Quest 3's higher entry price. Even taking inflation into account, it's still $150 more than the Quest 2, putting it in a different price bracket.

Last year's leaked Meta hardware roadmap, as well as reports from The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and a national analyst who has been reliable in the past, suggest that Meta is planning to soon release a cheaper version of the Quest 3 as a direct replacement for the Quest 2, which may be rumored to be called the "Quest 3S" or "Quest 3 Lite. "Meta's recent move suggests that it's trying to clear out inventory of the Quest 2 and its official accessories to make way for a new, less expensive head-mounted display.

This cheaper version of Quest 3 was crucial for Reality Labs to become key to growth throughout the year.

Reality Labs reported $4.29 billion in costs in Q1 2024, a slight decrease of $1% compared to Q1 2023.

This means that Reality Labs realized a "loss" of $385 million in the first quarter of 2024. While it's correct to characterize this as a loss from a financial perspective, it's actually more accurate to characterize much of this as a long-term investment. XR head-mounted displays like Quest are still relatively early in the technology and far from mature, and Meta hasn't even launched its first AR glasses yet.Reality Labs has spent more than $50% on the development of AR glasses.

In addition, while Reality Labs' revenues grew by $30% in Q1 2024, costs decreased by $1%, suggesting that Reality Labs is moving xuly toward profitability. This may also indicate that Quest 3 is less subsidized than Quest 2.

As in previous quarters, Susan Li told investors she expects those losses to continue to increase significantly over the next year due to "ongoing product development efforts and our investments to further expand our ecosystem."

Mark Zuckerberg has told investors in the past that he doesn't think Reality Labs will be profitable until 2030, viewing it as a long-term investment in the future of computing.
